Sitting quietly with Peter in his house this morning, I suddenly heard lots of noise – fireworks actually. It was a special occasion and the gods from the local temples were visiting each other.
The religion here is a mix of ‘folk religion’ and Taoism. Look here for interesting information of the religion in Taiwan. The concept of having a mix of religions is a difficult concept for us in the West. The gods are in the sedan chair and are bounced along by a group of young people, accompanied by loud music and fireworks.
There are many temples, I believe it’s one per area. Businesses along the way have burners outside their premises and as ‘the gods’ go by they throw in paper ‘temple’ money to bring them good luck.
